Chapter Thirteen

Patient Accounts

The decision to undergo LASIK refractive surgery seems to be based most often on a vocational or psychological reason, which makes it an elective procedure rather than a medical necessity. Primarily, the decision to have the surgery is the patient's, unless the surgeon determines that the patient, for medical or other reasons, would not be a good candidate.

Medical studies and scientific data may provide compelling evidence in support of having LASIK vision-correction surgery performed. Nevertheless, the most convincing testimonies praising the outcomes of surgery come from the many patients who provide firsthand accounts of their successful operations that resulted in much-improved vision and a better quality of life.

For the benefit of potential patients who are considering LASIK surgery, comments from several individuals with "LASIK success stories" are given in the following pages.

Every Single Day I Wake Up Totally Grateful

"Every single day I wake up totally grateful that I can see perfectly without glasses." —Emily C

God Led Me to You

"Dear Dr. Wang,

"It is early morning and I wanted to write you and thank you for the blessing I receive every morning when I open my eyes. There are no adequate words to convey my feelings appropriately.

"As I carefully considered the option of corrective surgery, I prayed daily that God would lead me where He would have me to go. As you know, I was previously scheduled for this procedure at another facility. Through divine intervention, God led me to you. During the procedure, I felt the presence of God and knew that He would not abandon me. This assurance along with your patience, assurance, and expertise made my procedure a very positive experience for me.

"Every day is a new beginning for me now. I pray for you daily and ask that God will continue to bless your practice as He has so obviously blessed you with numerous talents that you so gracefully share. I am forever grateful to you.

"Sincerely," —Vicki Brumfield

How Much I Am Enjoying Life Without Glasses!

"Dear Dr. Wang,

"I just can't even begin to tell you how much I am enjoying life without glasses! I want to thank you for your part in making the miracle of laser surgery work for me. Having been ‘blind as a bat' without glasses, I am just amazed at my ability to see the world without those thick lenses. I feel so much more confident now, and I am enjoying people telling me how much better I look. I am particularly enjoying important business and social occasions, now since I know I look better and feel better about myself. You can't believe what a tremendous difference it has made to my self-esteem. It is a nice feeling to have people tell me that I have great eyes.

"I also want you to know what a phenomenal staff you have. From the front desk all the way back, I have been treated royally, and everyone made the entire process so simple. I could not be more thrilled. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

"Many, many thanks. You can be certain that I will be sending more patients in your direction (all the way from Biloxi, Mississippi) now that they have seen what your Excimer laser surgery has done for me." —Richard M

I Feel like a Kid Again

"Dear Dr. Wang,

"This note is to thank you for the wonderful job you did on my LASIK surgery. Because of your superb skills, the operation was pain-free, with very little discomfort and so far, complication free. What a miracle! You returned my eyes to me and I feel like a kid again.

"This was such an emotional experience that there are no words that are adequate enough to express what I am feeling.

"I especially would like to thank your extremely capable staff for their support and guidance, especially Beth, Dr. Kang, Wendy, Stephanie, Joe and Dawn. Also, Dr. Shen, although he did not do my evaluation.

"It is such a comforting feeling to know that one can trust his eyes in your hands.

"Thank you again," —Marlene Bettman

I Knew the First Letter on the Eye Chart Was an "E" Because I Had Been There Before

"Dear Dr. Wang,

"I want to let you know that I had an A+ experience during my LASIK procedure and during the post operative course.

"I am certain I am just one of a long line of ecstatic patients who want to ‘thank you' and your staff in a very heart-felt way. My vision was bad enough to have previous practitioners tell me that the only reason I knew the first letter on the eye chart was an ‘E' was because I had been there before. Now I am comfortably 20/15 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left! A few nights ago I remarked to my wife that I could see the Big Dipper (no big feat for most, but I had needed glasses to allow me to see prior to the LASIK you performed.) I thank God above for the ability He has given you. I pray that He will richly bless you and your patients.

"I look forward to seeing you in the future. Thank you so much for all you have done for me. Please let me know if I can be of service to you.

"Sincerely," —R. Terry Ellis, DDS

It Feels like a Miracle

"The purpose of this memo is to thank you for the wonderful LASIK surgery you did on my eyes.

"When I was 13 years old, I developed bad nearsightedness and astigmatism. In my thirties, I was unable to wear my contacts any more. The afternoon after my surgery I went walking with my wife and dog. It was wonderful.

"For the first time since I was 13, I could see clearly again without glasses. It feels like a miracle, like an unbelievable blessing every day.

"As the co-developer of patented technology that enables businesses with used oil to cleanly turn it into outstanding profits on-site, I recognize great technology and a skilled team when I see them.

"You are to be congratulated. You have both.

"I would highly recommend LASIK surgery if it is done by you and your team to anyone who asked.

"Thanks again." —a grateful patient

It Took Just One Visit to Your Office to Convince Me!

"Dear Dr. Wang,

"Just a quick note of gratitude for my very successful LASIK procedure this summer. Like most people with severe myopia and astigmatism, I never dreamed that something like LASIK would be available in my lifetime. Thank goodness it came along!

"As an attorney who really depends upon her eyes for constant reading, I was always terrified of the older techniques of refractive correction. I guess I was afraid of the pain and the possibility of a slip of the scalpel. When I read about you and the LASIK procedure, it took just one visit to your office to convince me that it was the way to go! As with most patients, I can tell you that my only regret is that this wasn't available twenty years ago.

"As you know, my uncorrected vision was –8.5 in each eye, with significant astigmatism. Being over forty, I was advised that reading glasses would be a probability after my surgery. However, thanks to your ‘monovision' technique, I can see exceptionably well without glasses for all purposes and hope to avoid reading glasses for years to come. I would encourage all potential patients to consider LASIK without any fear or trepidation. I personally found the surgical procedure to be pain free, as well as the recovery period. For those with more discomfort, I understand that prescription analgesics and anesthetic eye drops can make the healing period much more comfortable.

"My recovery period was just a few days, which was a small price to pay for losing a lifelong disability. In fact, that's precisely what poor vision is—a real disability. Being a chronic allergy/sinus suffer, this surgery has improved the quality of my life. Wearing contact lenses all day during allergy or smog season proved more and more difficult each year. Frankly, my eyes were hurting all the time from the environmental pollutants which were ‘competing' with my contact lenses to torture me!

"I'm amazed that I have far fewer headaches than I did before. This is a real godsend. I love being able to sleep on airplanes or take catnaps in dusty dry places without worrying about contact lenses. Best of all, I can see my bedroom alarm clock! It's also easier to be in wet and windy places, which is nice if you're into sports and travel.

"Let me close by saying that I am most grateful to you and the other wonderful doctors of your staff who have provided my pre- and post-op care. Your colleagues deserve kudos for their professionalism and kindness. They are truly a key to the success of your clinic. I have recommended, and will continue to recommend, many friends and colleagues to your office for LASIK. That is my ultimate way of expressing my confidence in your skills." —Penny S

It Was So Simple and Painless

"Dear Dr. Wang,

"I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the results of my LASIK procedure for nearsightedness. As you know, after a lifetime of glasses and contact lenses for a prescription of -6 diopters I had the procedure about 2 months ago. I am now seeing between 20/20 and 20/25. It is unbelievable. You and your staff did an outstanding job in explaining the procedure and the follow up protocol. I really had no problems at all. It was so simple and painless that I am recommending it to all of my nearsighted friends. As you know, my wife, Judy had her eyes done approximately three weeks ago and she has also done very well.

"Again, both of us would like to express our appreciation to you and your staff for the outstanding care you provided. It is really a miracle to so easily be restored to normal vision. Thanks again.

"Sincerely," —William M. Regan, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry

LASIK Surgery Has Changed My Life

"I was very nervous before my procedure. The thought of it was scary but the staff here was very comforting and assured me that everything would go very smoothly. Debbie and Dr. Shen were great. They did my eye exam. They explained everything and were very caring. Debbie even came in the next day to see how my surgery went. Dr. Wang is an absolute genius. He also was very, very nice and he really seems to care about his patients. I could really tell that he was excited for my new vision. Wendy and Stephanie were great. Also everything was done in an efficient manner. They were always telling me what was going on and that helped to put me at ease. I had absolutely no pain during the surgery. LASIK surgery has changed my life and I would recommend it to anyone with bad vision. Beth at the front desk was also very nice. She answered a lot of questions and her sense of humor helped my nervousness before, but now I feel a bit silly because there is nothing to be nervous about. The staff here is great! — Kira Gerhlein

My Life Has Been Impacted as Dramatically as a Person Who Has Just Regained the Ability to Walk Without Crutches

"From my earliest memories, poor eyesight has dramatically affected my life. By the time I was diagnosed with poor eyesight in the third grade, I had already fallen behind my classmates. I believe that this affected my academic achievement throughout the rest of my school years. My nearsightedness was severe enough to require unusually thick lenses, giving me an odd appearance. I was very self-conscious about my looks.

"Later, when I was old enough to begin wearing contacts, I had to put up with other frustrating effects. My eyes were very sensitive and I often suffered from allergies and irritations, not to mention the daily ritual of cleaning them. I would say that life with contacts was not easy.

"Fed up and desperate for an alternative solution, I began to investigate corrective surgery. I heard great things about Dr. Wang and his clinic. Even so, in my mind I couldn't comprehend the possibility of a total cure. I decided to have the laser surgery, but my expectations were modest. On June 23, 1999, my life was forever changed.

"Within minutes after the procedure, I knew that something miraculous had occurred. I could see clearly for the first time in my life. The feeling of elation that I felt when I could see my husband's black truck drive into the parking lot cannot be described. The weeks immediately following the surgery were incredible. I have been on an emotional high ever since. I hesitate to compare poor eyesight with other debilitating handicaps, but I feel that my life has been impacted as dramatically as a person who has just regained the ability to walk without crutches.

"The full impact of having perfect vision without lenses really hit home on our summer vacation. We headed out onto a lake riding our personal water craft. As we left the shore behind, I felt for the first time in my life that I could do something with full force and total enjoyment. I hit a wave head on, blasting my face with a huge spray of water, instead of thinking, ‘Oh, my goodness! Where are my contacts? How will I see to get back?' I was overcome by joy. I was not thinking about anything else but having a good time. I felt powerful and confident. I continued to ride at a pace I never dreamed of. My husband gave me a weird look—he wondered where my jet ski got all that speed and I got all that spirit." —Jet Ski and Motorcycle Enthusiast

No Words Can Express My Sincere Gratitude

"Dear Dr. Wang and Staff:

"The notable contributions of each personnel together with professionalism and genuine warmness were the nicest qualities shown.

"Needless to say, Stephanie and Wendy are well trained and confident technicians and above all, they have demonstrated excellent team work. For the patient, this is a great comfort. Also, the orientation prior to the surgery given by Beth Smith helped my wondering mind as to what to expect during and after the LASIK procedure. In my opinion, it is quite important to have this knowledge beforehand.

"And now, my dear Doctor Wang, you are a God-sent, meticulous, miracle worker. With the help of sophisticated equipment, state-of-the-art technology, but most importantly, your success and the combination of your brilliant mind (wisdom), hard work and talented gift, you have given me new sight. You have no idea how much I am grateful to have you and how proud I am of you. Thank you very much for my NEW EYESIGHT!

"Most gratefully," —June

Thank You for Doing Such a Fantastic Job on My Surgery

"Dr. Wang,

"Just wanted to thank you for doing such a fantastic job on my surgery; it makes a big difference. I really appreciated your concern. Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to call me. That meant so much. You are a very dedicated and caring doctor. There are not many out there like you.

"Thank you." —Debbie P

Thank You for Your Excellent Performance with My Vision

"Thank you for your excellent performance with my vision. I had worn glasses since elementary school and had 20/200 vision when Dr. Wang performed LASIK surgery in June, 1998. The day after surgery, I had 20/70 vision in my right eye and 20/40 vision in my left. At six months, I have 20/20 vision in my right eye and almost 20/15 vision in my left! I greatly appreciate the ability to discard the thick lenses. I feel Dr. Wang is an extremely professional and competent laser vision surgeon." —Seth J. Scholer, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Vanderbilt University Medical Center

The Freedom of Not Having to Use Glasses Is Akin to Being Given a Pair of Eagle's Wings

"It is somewhat difficult to describe my elation and satisfaction with having had LASIK. I feel like a child who has spent his entire life trying to find the perfect toy, and then one day someone blesses him by giving it to him.

"Having worn glasses for forty-three of my forty-nine years, the freedom of not having to use glasses is akin to what a person might feel if given a pair of eagle's wings and allowed to soar through the sky. Like Superman, I feel that I can leap over tall buildings and bend steel with my bare hands." —Unnamed

You Have Changed My Life Profoundly

"I would like to thank you for the personal interest you have shown and the courtesy you have extended to me in regard to my recent LASIK surgery. I want you to know that you have changed my life profoundly by performing this miracle surgery and giving me the opportunity to see clearly without corrective lenses for the first time in my life. I will be forever grateful."

"Sincerely," —Ann E
